Over the centuries, the urban building of Mouguelas has undergone various expansions and modifications to serve different purposes.
The property initially featured a fortified tower with defensive functions, dating back to the 13th century. In the 16th century, additional structures were added, including houses, a barn, a stable, a hayloft, and a bread oven.
In 1680, the Fort of São João or Nossa Senhora da Ajuda was built in the Mouguelas area. By the early 18th century, the residential complex on the property had already been expanded.
In 1872, when Count Ernest Armand purchased the property, a large house already existed. This building was demolished in 1903 when Count Abel Henri Armand commissioned the construction of a palace, designed by architect Raul Lino.
