The Comenda de Mouguelas Interpretive Center is dedicated to sharing the rich history and heritage of this remarkable estate named Comendas de Mouguelas. Presented here in a digital format, this project will eventually be enhanced by a physical realization in the future.
The Comenda de Mouguelas Estate is located in Portugal, in the municipality of Setúbal. Spanning 600 hectares and fully integrated into the biogenetic reserve of the Arrábida Natural Park, the estate features mountainous landscapes and a rich natural heritage, including diverse fauna and flora, forests, beaches, and the meeting point of the Sado River estuary with the Atlantic Ocean.
With evidence of human presence dating back to the Neolithic period, the Comenda Estate offers a journey through time, from the Roman era to the Middle Ages—closely linked to the Military Order of Santiago da Espada—through the Modern Era, and into the contemporary period. At the end of the 19th century, the estate became the property of the French Armand family, and in the early 20th century, one of the most significant architectural works by renowned architect Raul Lino was constructed here: the Comenda Palace.
The palace is the estate's most striking feature, not only for its size and architectural beauty but also for its privileged location: perched on a high cliff, surrounded by lush mountain vegetation, and overlooking the vibrant blue waters of the sea.
The Comenda Interpretive Center offers a journey through time.
